On August 22nd, we arrived at the Brooklyn Hospital Center to complete an elective that was previously fore-warned to be a catalyst to a change in our view of medicine and an eye opener to some of the sad actualities of this world.
The Pediatric Child Advocacy elective is not a well known option for medical students and is predominantly spent away from the 'white coat and stethoscope' and up-front with the realities of what happens in our patients' lives; before, after, and in this case, as a result of our consultation.
This elective helped to reiterate the need for good histories, physicals and doctor-patient relationships as these have in times been the very things that have saved the lives of children not just in an emergency room from a medical illness but also in their house-hold from abusive guardians ranging from various forms of neglect to sexual abuse and murder.
